Les Bursill


Les Bursill OAM JP is a Dharawal (Aboriginal Australian) historian, archaeologist, anthropologist and publisher, born in Hurstville, New South Wales in 1945. Les is executive editor of a quarterly arts history journal, Doryanthes.  He is strongly identified with the Dharawal peoples of Northern Illawarra. He says: “I spent my University time studying Illawarra and Parramatta Aboriginal peoples. As a student, I soon learned that unless you know and understand the Language of the people you study, you cannot access the deeper elements of their culture”.

Les has lived his life in the Illawarra and is presently Elder in Residence at the University of Wollongong, Shoalhaven.
