Shakira Hussein is a writer and researcher based at the Asia Institute at The University of Melbourne. Her book, From Victims to Suspects: Muslim Women since 9/11 was published by New South. She says: “I’m currently inspired by writers who change the way we see both Australia and the larger world. The late Stella Young’s writing helped me to understand the disability that has become a large part of my everyday life due to multiple sclerosis and she encouraged me to write on that topic at a time when I still felt like the new girl on the disability block”.

Shakira writes about a range of topics including gender, racism, disability and South Asia.
